When it comes to painting, most people focus on the color, the finish, or the final coat. But the real secret to a flawless, long-lasting paint job? Preparation. In fact, professionals (like us) often say that prep accounts for 80% of the work - and they’re not exaggerating.
The Hidden Work Before the Paint
Before a brush or roller ever touches a wall, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes:
Cleaning – Dirt, dust, and grease can prevent paint from adhering properly. A clean surface ensures your paint looks smooth and lasts longer.
Sanding – Walls and trim may have bumps, rough patches, or old paint drips. Sanding smooths the surface, giving the new paint something to grip and making it look polished.
Patching & Repairing – Cracks, holes, and dents need to be filled and leveled. Skipping this step can make even the most expensive paint look uneven.
Caulking – Gaps around trim, baseboards, and windows are sealed to prevent paint from cracking and to give a seamless finish.
Masking & Protecting – Floors, furniture, and fixtures are covered so only the intended surfaces get paint. This may sound simple, but careful masking saves hours of clean-up later.
Why Prep Makes All the Difference
Skipping or rushing prep might save time in the short term - but it almost always leads to visible imperfections, uneven coverage, and paint that peels or chips prematurely. Proper prep ensures:
A smooth, professional finish
Better adhesion and durability
Less touch-up work later
A final result that truly shows off the color and finish you chose
Every Job is Different
The amount of prep needed depends on the project and your expectations. Some surfaces need minimal prep, while others - especially older homes or exterior projects -require a lot of behind-the-scenes work. That’s why at Tristan Savoie Painting & Decorating, we assess the level of prep during our quote process and discuss options with clients, so the final result meets their expectations without surprises.
Trust the Prep, Trust the Result
Next time you see a beautifully painted wall, remember: the paint is only part of the story. The work that goes into prepping the surface is what truly makes it shine. By investing in proper prep, you’re investing in a paint job that looks fantastic and stands the test of time.
